Naturalization Process (N-400 Application)
Naturalization allows green card holders to become U.S. citizens. Here's the step-by-step process:
Initial Eligibility Assessment:
- Permanent Resident Status: Ensure you have held a green card for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
- Continuous Residence & Physical Presence: Confirm that you have lived in the U.S. for at least half of the last 5 years and met physical presence requirements.
Gathering of Supporting Documentation:
- Proof of Residence: Prepare evidence of continuous U.S. residence, such as tax returns or utility bills.
- Good Moral Character: Provide documentation showing that you meet the good moral character requirement.
Filing the Petition:
- Form N-400: Submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, along with required documents and the $725 fee.
- Biometrics Appointment: After submission, you will receive a biometrics appointment notice to get fingerprinted.
Interview & Oath Ceremony:
- Naturalization Interview: You will attend an interview with a USCIS officer, who will test your English and knowledge of U.S. civics.
- Oath of Allegiance: If approved, you will attend a ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance and become a U.S. citizen.
